Hungria
A rapacious appetite for media ownership.
In 2017 businessmen withclose ties to Hungary’s ruling party Fidesz succeeded the acquisitions of media-outlets pushing out foreign media companies. The biggest score is no doubt the total control over the regional daily newspapers, the money-men of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán managed to take over the last three regional daily newspapers. Nevertheless, the Hungarian media-landscape is still colorful, media consumers can find large variety of opinions both in print and online, including investigating reports revealing corruption affairs of top Fidesz and government officials. In Hungary two giant media bubbles are to be observed. One created by the pro-government and pro-Fidesz media-outlets obsessed by the migration and the “defense of Hungary and its borders”, the campaign against Mr George Soros, and the other one focusing on the corruption scandals in series but without any political consequences and criminal liability. The survival of the government critical media-outlets is partly due to the fact that the former money-man of Orbán, Lajos Simicska – who in February 2015 had publicly broken up with the Prime Minister – is still able to fund his media empire originally created to support Fidesz. The No. 1 commercial TV channel, RTL Klub and the No. 1 news-site, index.hu both government-critical are still targeted by the new Hungarian media tycoons.
