Uncontrollable borders

Journalists and community radio stations are often subjected to threats or physical violence instigated by criminal organizations or local officials, who benefit from a climate of near-total impunity. Reporters are also often the targets of violence at demonstrations. Journalists sometimes pay with their lives for trying to do investigative reporting on drug trafficking and corruption along the borders with Brazil and Argentina. Ownership of Paraguay’s media continues to be concentrated in few hands and community radio stations still struggle to survive.
