Uncontrollable borders

Journalists and community radio stations are often subjected to threats or physical violence instigated by criminal organisations or local officials, who benefit from a climate of near-total impunity. Reporters are also often the targets of violence at demonstrations. Journalists sometimes pay with their lives for trying to carry out investigative reporting on drug trafficking and corruption along the very dangerous borders with Brazil and Argentina. They include Léo Veras, a Brazilian journalist murdered in February 2020. Ownership of Paraguay’s media continues to be concentrated in few hands and community radio stations still struggle to survive.
