Two suspects arrested for murder of cameraman in Sindh province

Noting that two people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting death of cameraman Munir Sangi on 29 May 2006 in Larkana in the southeastern province of Sindh, Reporters Without Borders today urged the provincial authorities to do everything possible to identify and arrest those who instigated this murder. The two detained suspects are Mullan Madad (also known as Madoo Unar) and Abdul Karim (aka Adloo Unar). Four other persons have reportedly been taken into custody in connection with the case. Sangi worked for the privately-owned Kawish Television Network (KTN). Several local officials have also been suspended for alleged misconduct in connection with the investigation, including a Larkana district police officer and the forensic doctor who carried out the first autopsy, Akhtar Hussain, who apparently falsified his report to hide the fact that Sangi was shot. At the family's request his body was exhumed for a second autopsy that confirmed that his death was the result of a gunshot injury. ----------------------- 31.05.2006 TV cameraman fatally shot in Sindh Reporters Without Borders voiced regret today at the fatal shooting of cameraman Munir Sangi on 29 May in Larkana, in the southeastern province of Sindh. Sangi, who worked for Kawish Television Network (KTN), a privately-owned, Sindhi-language station, had received threats over his coverage of alleged abuses by Altaf Unar, a local minister. “It is vital that this murder should not go unpunished,” the press freedom organisation said. “The Pakistani police and judicial authorities must carry out a professional and impartial investigation.” Sangi was covering an armed conflict between the Unar and Abro tribes in Larkana when he was shot and wounded in the chest and died a few hours later after receiving no treatment. It is not known who shot him. Journalists have staged demonstrations in the major cities of Sindh to press the authorities to identify and arrest those responsible for this murder and to give journalists better protection.
