Twelve press freedom organisations call for release of jailed journalists in Cuba
They issued an urgent appeal to the Cuban authorities to free these journalists and to put an end to the state's monopoly of the news media. And they stressed that Cuba now has more journalists in prison than any other country in the world.
The 12 associations were:
the Association of Eritrean Journalists in Exile (Eritrea), Journalist in Danger (Democratic Republic of Congo), the Manuel Márquez Sterling Association (Cuba), the Press and Society Institute (Peru), the Association of Haitian Journalists (Haiti), the Foundation for Press Freedom (Colombia), the Bangladesh Centre for Development, Journalism and Communication (Bangladesh), the Burma Media Association (Burma), the Foundation for the Defence of Glasnost (Russia), the Mass Media Institute (Ukraine), the Belorussian Association of Journalists (Belarus) and the Centre for the Defence of the Freedom of the Press, Publishing and Creation (Tunisia).
