SYRIA: NGOs write to UN about Syrian journalist’s disappearance five years ago

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and 14 other human rights NGOs have sent a joint letter to the United Nations on the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of Syrian journalist and human rights lawyer Razan Zaitouneh and three of her colleagues, calling for an investigation into their fate.

Zaitouneh and her three colleagues – Samira Khalil, Nazem Hamadi and Wa’el Hamada – were abducted on 9 December 2013 from the Violations Documentation Centre in Douma, a Damascus suburb controlled by rebel forces at the time. Since then, no information has emerged about their fate.

The joint letter calls on the UN, all international and regional actors involved in Syria and all parties to the Syrian conflict to actively facilitate an investigation into what happened to these four human rights defenders.

Zaitouneh’s family has created a website where her most important articles can be read.

The joint letter by the 15 NGOs can be read here.
