Safenewsroom.org
Founded by Taha Siddiqui, a Pakistani journalist who was forced to flee abroad after an abduction attempt in January 2018, Safenewsrooms.org is an online platform designed to help the South Asian media to combat censorship. SAFE is an acronym of South Asians for Freedom of Expression as well as alluding to the need for a secure environment for independent journalism. What with Pakistan’s military establishment and intelligence agencies, India’s Hindu nationalists and Bangladesh’s radical Islamist militants, journalists who dare to cover “forbidden” subjects are exposed to threats, abduction and murder by violent groups all over the sub-continent.
Safenewsrooms.org aims to be a sanctuary where journalists are free to safely store their research and to report the acts of harassment or censorship to which they have been subjected. A few weeks after its launch in May 2018, the Pakistani authorities blocked access to the website without giving any grounds. It was nominated for RSF’s Prize for Independence in 2018.
