RSF condemns police violence against journalists during demonstrations

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) condemns targeted police violence against journalists during recent demonstrations, including those on May Day and recent “Nuit Debout” protests, and urges Prime Minister Manuel Valls to publicly condemn these abuses.

RSF has noted an increase in cases of unjustified use of force by the police in recent weeks. The victims include Jaime Alekos, a Spanish journalist who was injured by teargas grenades and rubber bullets on 12 April while filming one of the nighttime “Nuit Debout” protests in Paris.

On 1 May, the traditional Labour Day march was marred by violence that was well documented and widely reported on social networks.

Two videos show people being hit while filming or photographing demonstrations.

This violence must be clearly and formally condemned at the highest government level. France is ranked 45th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2016 World Press Freedom Index.
