One RSF member and a journalist arrested by police in London

A group of around ten RSF activists demonstrated at the Zimbabwe tourist office in London on the president‚s 78th birthday to urge him to restore press freedom to his country. The demonstrators plastered the tourist office windows with posters showing an effigy of the president bearing the words, President Mugabe: Enemy of Press Freedom. After a half-hour demonstration one member of Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders - RSF) , Jean-Francois Julliard, Africa research desk head at the international headquarters in Paris and Tim Gopsill, editor of the monthly newspaper of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), The Journalist, were arrested. Mr Mugabe is on Reporters Without Borders' list of the world's worst "predators" of press freedom. Zimbabwe is one of the most repressive countries on the African continent as far as press freedom is concerned. Since January 2001, close to thirty journalists were arrested, many of them were threatened or assaulted, three foreign reporters were expelled from the country and the correspondent for a British daily, fearing reprisal, have fled Zimbabwe.
