Development Media Group

Founded in 2012, the Development Media Group (DMG) is a news agency that covers western Rakhine state, including human rights violations there by Myanmar’s army in its operations against the Arakan Army, a rebel group fighting for autonomy. When the conflict was intensifying and the government was suspending news websites there in the first half of 2019, DMG editor Aung Marm Oo learned that he was facing a possible five-year jail sentence on a charge of complicity in an illegal association. He has been in hiding ever since. DMG’s English and Burmese-language sites and 220 other so-called “fake news” websites were blocked on government orders a year later, at the height of the Covid-19 crisis.
