Christophe Deloire appointed Reporters Without Borders director-general

The Reporters Without Borders board of governors, chaired by Dominique Gerbaud, announces the appointment of French journalist Christophe Deloire to succeed Jean-François Julliard as Reporters Without Borders director-general. He will take up the post in July. “We wanted someone who knows the media from the inside, who stands up for freedom of information and who is also a good manager,” Gerbaud said. “We found that combination in Christophe Deloire, who has reenergized the Journalists Training Centre in the four years he has been running it. A former investigative reporter who writes well, defends his views with passion and is an Internet and new technology enthusiast, he has everything it takes to give new impetus to Reporters Without Borders.” Aged 41, Deloire has been director of the Paris-based Journalists Training Centre (CFJ) since 2008. After graduating from the Higher School for Economic and Commercial Sciences (ESSEC) in Paris in 1994, he did his national service at TF1 television’s bureau in Berlin and then began working as a journalist for newspapers and TV stations, above all Arte and LCI. He worked for the French newsweekly Le Point from 1998 to 2007, initially for its society section and then its politics section, doing investigative stories and features in France and abroad. An editor with the French publishing house Flammarion until 2009, he is the author of several best-selling books (including L'Enquête Sabotée in 2004, Sexus Politicus in 2006 and Circus Politicus in 2012) and has made a documentary. “I am very happy to be joining Reporters Without Borders and its team, one that is both energetic and constructive,” Deloire said. “As a journalist, I have always tried to give content and strength to freedom of information. Now I will work to continue Reporters Without Borders’ development and to do everything possible to protect this freedom and those who embody it.” A registered non-profit organization founded in 1985, Reporters Without Borders is one of the leading independent NGOs promoting and defending the freedom to report and receive news and information. It monitors and denounces media freedom violations, urges governments to stop censoring, gives moral and financial support to persecuted journalists and provides war reporters with material assistance designed to improve their safety. Reporters Without Borders has an active network of 150 correspondents in all five continents and 10 international bureaux (in Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, Madrid, Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Tunis, Vienna and Washington DC). Its headquarters is in Paris.
