In a cable referring to President Aliev family as the Corleones (in The Godfather movie), the President’s foreign policy is seen as “a helpful bias toward integration with the West”, yet “at home his policies have become increasingly authoritarian and hostile to diversity of political views.” The President takes challenge as an affront, “to the detriment of the country's democratic development”. “The example of the crude retaliation against the young bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade is the most recent and public example”.
