Authorities report three arrests in Al-Masar TV chief’s fatal shooting

Reporters Without Borders hails the efforts being made by the Iraqi authorities in their investigation into the murder of Taha Al-Alawi, the head of satellite television station Al-Masar TV, who was shot dead in Baghdad on 8 April. Abed Farhan Dhiab, the head of the Iraqi Political Prisoners Committee, was killed in the same shooting. The head of Baghdad security operations command announced at news conference yesterday that three men who participated in the shooting have been arrested. A video was shown to journalists in which the three men confessed to belonging to Al Qaeda. -------- 08.04.2011 - TV station director gunned down Reporters Without Borders condemns today’s murder of Taha Al-Alawi, the head of satellite television station Al-Masar TV, in the Werij district of southern Baghdad. Gunmen opened fire on the car in which he was travelling. The organization urges the Iraqi authorities to carry out a proper investigation into this killing in order to find those responsible and bring them to justice. Impunity for murderers of journalists must stop. Al-Alawi is the fifth journalist to have been killed in Iraq since the start of 2011 and the tenth since the United States announced the departure of all of its combat forces from Iraq at the end of August 2010.
