Another journalist gunned down, tenth this year, motive not yet known
Organisation:
Henry Suazo, Tegucigalpa-based radio HRN’s correspondent in La Ceiba, in the north-coast department of Atlántida, was gunned down as he left his home yesterday morning. His unidentified killers immediately left the scene. The motive is not yet known.
Aged 39, Suazo also worked for Cablevisión del Atlántico, a local TV station. He was the 10th journalist to be murdered in Honduras this year. It has been established that three of the victims were killed in connection with their work.
Reporters Without Borders deplores the frequency of violence against journalists in this Central American country and urges the police to lose no time in carrying out an impartial an effective investigation into Suazo’s murder. The possibility of a link with his work must not be ruled out. He was the second journalist to be murdered in La Ceiba this year.
The repeated killings of journalists reflect the vulnerability of the media in Honduras and the dangerous climate to which they are exposed. President Porfirio Lobo insists that his government has played no role in the attacks on journalists, which he has blamed on “criminal violence” in Honduras.
