Vatileaks 2 – end in sight

Reporters Without Borders reiterates its support for Emiliano Fittipaldi and Gianluigi Nuzzi, the two journalists on trial in the Vatican in the “Vatileaks” case about a leak of confidential documents from the Holy See.

“Our support for Emiliano Fittipaldi and Gianluigi Nuzzi is undiminished,” RSF editor-in-chief Aude Rossigneux said. “It is one thing for the Vatican to try to avoid bad publicity, but fear of scandal does not justify censorship or the judicial harassment of journalists whose only crime was to do some investigative reporting.”

The latest hearing, held on 6 April, was marked by a City of Rome ban on a demonstration in support of the two journalists by the Italian National Press Federation (FNSI), the RAI Union of Journalists (USIGRAI) and the Articolo 21 media freedom collective. The ban, which was ignored, was seen by journalists as a very negative message from the authorities.

The next hearing in the trial, which is reaching its end, its scheduled for 11 April.
