Executive Board

The Executive Board’s role is to implement the main actions adopted by the General Assembly. Composed of twenty-five board members elected for two years by secret ballot, it sets the objectives and the action plan of the association. Executive Board members meet at least four times a year.

All active members, up to date with their dues, can be candidates for the Executive Board.

The International Council

Composed of RSF's country sections, this council determines the main orientations and actions of International Reporters Without Borders. It meets three times a year and approves the statement of accounts for the past year as well as the budget for the following year.

The Emeritus Council

Through their positions and their actions, the members of the Emeritus Council of Reporters Without Borders embody the fight for freedom of information and the defense of human rights. The vocation of the Emeritus Council is to support and enrich the fight of Reporters Without Borders.

ROBERTO SAVIANO

Italian writer and journalist Roberto Saviano has been living in an undisclosed location since 2006, following the publication of his bestseller Gomorra, in which he accurately described the criminal activities of the Camorra in Naples. He lives under permanent police protection.

MICHÈLE MONTAS

Haitian journalist Michèle Montas has denounced and worked against the censorship suffered by information professionals in Haiti. Survivor of an assassination attempt in 2002, she was spokesperson to the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon.

WOLE SOYINKA

The first African author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986, Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka is involved in the fight against corruption and the promotion of human rights in the political life of Nigeria. He chaired the African Cultural Community. In Lagos, a center for investigative journalism bears his name.

WU'ER KAIXI

Wu’er Kaixi was one of the student leaders of the demonstrations in Tian'anmen Square in 1989. Partcipant of a hunger strike during these events, he became a figure of protest by calling out Chinese Premier Li Peng on national television.

SHIRIN EBADI

First female Iranian judge, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, Shirin Ebadi is an emblematic figure in the defense of human rights in Iran, tirelessly denouncing and combatting violence and censorship.

BALTASAR GARZON

A former Spanish examining judge, Baltasar Garzon contributed to reporting war crimes committed under Augusto Pinochet in Chile and has revealed cases of corruption, trafficking and fraud on an international scale. He is now Julian Assange's defense team coordinator.

ADAM MICHNIK

Polish journalist, essayist and historian, Adam Michnik was one of the outstanding figures of the democratic opposition in Poland until 1989. Today he is director of the daily Gazeta Wyborcza as well as an emblematic figure in the fight for cultural, social and political freedoms.

TASLIMA NASREEN

Bangladeshi doctor and woman of letters, Taslima Nasreen has lived in exile since 1994 and currently lives in India. Nasreen's works denounce the violations of fundamental rights in Bangladesh, in particular women’s rights. Her work is part of the fight against the censorship of which she herself is a victim.

GHASSAN SALAMÉ

Political scientist and former Lebanese Minister of Culture, Ghassan Salamé was special adviser to former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. A specialist in the political and cultural dynamics of the Middle East, he is a survivor of the explosion that targeted the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad in 2003.

EUGENIO SCALFARI

Doyen of the Italian press and former member of the Italian parliament, Eugenio Scalfari participated in the creation and development of the Italian daily La Repubblica and the news magazine L’Espresso. He has constantly fought against political censorship by diversifying the Italian media panorama.

ZLATKO DIZDAREVIC

Bosnian journalist Zlatko Dizdarević was chief editor of the daily Oslobođenje, whose building was destroyed on July 20,1992, during the siege of Sarajevo. The editors continued their work from an basement shelter. Former director of the weekly Svijet, he was also Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Croatia.

MICHAELLE JEAN

Recognized for the diversity of her career, whether journalistic, political, diplomatic or cultural, Michaelle Jean was Secretary General of the Organization de la Francophonie (OIF) and Special Representative for Haiti at Unesco.

HORACIO VERBITSKY

Argentinian journalist, director of Página 12, president of the Center for Legal and Social Studies, Horacio Verbitsky is an activist for the freedom of information. His investigations uncovered major political corruption scandals in the 1990s.

ALPHA OUMAR KONARE

Former President of The Republic of Mali and former President of the African Union Commission, Alpha Oumar Konaré has been very involved in promoting press freedom in Mali. In the 1980s, he founded and directed the cultural magazine Jamana, then the daily Les Echos, before creating, in 1991, Radio Bamakan, the first associative free radio station in Mali.
