The Turan news agency, which publishes its dispatches in three languages, is the only independent media outlet still active Azerbaijan. It was founded in 1990 by journalists who decided to fight for the right to produce reliable and independent news reporting instead of working for state media. Despite harassment by President Ilham Aliyev’s authoritarian regime, it is regarded as a leading news source because of its staff’s professionalism and it has not hesitated to cover the most sensitive stories. After Turan published reports about violations of the rights of opposition activists during the coronavirus pandemic, its website suffered the worst cyber-attacks in 30 years in May 2020.
