Democratic Republic of Congo

Impunity’s champion

Freedom of information is constantly violated in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Journalists are exposed to threats, physical violence, arrest, prolonged detention, and even murder. Under President Joseph Kabila, who has postponed the next presidential election, at least 11 journalists have been murdered without the perpetrators being brought to justice. The Internet is often disconnected and, in recent months, the authorities have been targeting the international media, jamming Radio France Internationale’s local transmissions in Kinshasa since November 4th, 2016.
