Abduction and arbitrary arrest

Being a journalist in Chad is extremely challenging. Reporters are often arrested for the content of their writing. Three journalists were subjected to prolonged pre-trial detention in 2013 but nowadays journalists are usually released fairly soon after arrest and remain free while awaiting trial. Nonetheless, some have reported being mistreated and beaten while held. Coverage of impunity or criticism of President Idriss Deby Itno is not tolerated and can lead to expulsion (for foreign journalists) or abduction and arbitrary detention (for Chadian journalists). Access to online social networks was disconnected during the April 2016 presidential election and was not restored for several months.
