The news website Özgürüz (which means “We are free” in Turkish) was launched on 24 January by Can Dündar, the former editor of the Istanbul daily Cumhuriyet, who fled to Germany after being given a jail sentence for revealing details of arms deliveries to Islamist groups in Syria by Turkish intelligence.
Based in Germany, the site aims to provide independently reported news to Turks in Turkey and the diaspora. Just two days after its launch, access to the site was blocked inside Turkey on the orders of the High Council for Information Technology (BTK) without reference to a judge. The site provides coverage in Turkish and German of Turkey’s foreign policy, human rights violations and minorities (including the Kurdish and Alevi minorities). It also covers the trials of intellectuals.
