Unfavorable legislation

The main threat to media freedom in Peru comes from the defamation laws, which often lead to journalists being threatened, intimidated, or prosecuted, especially in the more remote areas of the country. Media ownership is very concentrated, above all in the hands of the El Comercio group, which maintains an extraordinary level of domination of the national print media and TV markets. RSF registered cases of murder in 2016 and 2017.
